At the time in May 1980, Korea was dependent on the whole-scale import of potassium (K)-based chemical products. To reduce the import dependency ratio, UNID was founded under the goal of domestically producing potassium products. There are currently two divisions in operation: Chemical Division, which is in charge of manufacturing and selling potassium hydroxide (KOH) and potassium carbonate (K2CO3)—the basic inorganic chemical materials,—and Board Division, in charge of manufacturing and selling the company's principal product of medium-density fiberboard (MDF).
